General Manager (Fabrication) (#26-480)

Position Overview

A structural steel fabrication and coating operation is seeking a General Manager to lead plant operations in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. This role oversees operational performance, project execution, and financial results, and requires a hands-on leader experienced in fabrication environments supporting infrastructure, marine, or heavy highway projects.

Key Responsibilities

Operations, Scheduling & Project Delivery

  • Direct daily and weekly operations across estimating, detailing, fabrication, coating, and shipping functions at the Export facility

  • Coordinate office staff, estimators, and shop leadership to ensure efficient workflows and reliable delivery schedules

  • Oversee active projects from kickoff through completion, maintaining alignment with labor budgets, material allowances, and contractual milestones

  • Identify and resolve production bottlenecks, scheduling conflicts, and execution challenges to keep projects on track

Estimating, Sales Support & Contract Negotiation

  • Lead the review and development of project estimates, including drawings, specifications, and scope requirements

  • Participate in pricing strategy and negotiate scope, terms, and commercial conditions on larger or more complex awards

  • Support project pursuits and workload planning for the Steelton operation, ensuring balanced capacity and execution readiness

  • Provide operational input during bid reviews to confirm feasibility, risk exposure, and realistic production plans

Procurement & Materials Management

  • Oversee purchasing of structural steel, coatings, and specialty materials required for project execution

  • Manage procurement of select shop supplies, tooling, and equipment necessary to support fabrication and coating activities

  • Monitor material usage and pricing to ensure projects remain within approved cost targets

Financial & Performance Oversight

  • Ensure projects are executed within approved labor, material, and overhead budgets

  • Track and report on key performance indicators related to safety, quality, cost, productivity, and schedule adherence

  • Identify opportunities to improve margins through process improvements, cost control initiatives, and operational efficiencies

Safety, Quality & Compliance

  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture aligned with OSHA and environmental regulations

  • Maintain compliance with AISC certification requirements, including documentation, audits, and procedural adherence

  • Oversee quality control and inspection activities to ensure fabricated and coated products meet customer and project specifications

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop office personnel, supervisors, and shop teams

  • Address personnel matters promptly, fairly, and professionally

  • Serve as the escalation point for customer concerns or project issues, ensuring timely resolution and strong client relationships

  • Foster a culture centered on accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement

Required Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a General Manager, Operations Manager, or Plant Manager role within structural steel fabrication or a comparable heavy industrial environment

  • Demonstrated experience estimating, negotiating, selling, and executing fabrication projects

  • Strong working knowledge of AISC-certified fabrication operations

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently while meeting cost, schedule, and quality objectives

  • Experience leading both salaried and hourly teams in a production-driven setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience

  • Background supporting marine, heavy highway, infrastructure, or energy-related construction projects

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD-based detailing systems, estimating software, and rail shipping logistics

  • Experience coordinating workloads and production schedules across multiple fabrication facilities
