Welding Engineer

Houston, TX/Lake Charles, LA- 100K-120K

As the Welding Engineer, you will have the opportunity to be responsible for the design, examination, and meticulous evaluation of weld projects including planning, effective supervision, and comprehensive documentation of welding operations.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES MAY INCLUDE: 

Within the first 30 days and ongoing:

•       Becomes familiar with company’s machinery, products, tools, ProWrite software and the current established processes and procedures governing weld procedure qualifications.

•       Collaborates with Welders on the shop floor, reviews engineering drawings, assesses the need for new weld procedures, evaluates existing ones, and if necessary, analyzes customer specifications and purchases materials per job requirements in preparation for weld projects.

•       Begins to develop preliminary weld procedures and shop plans, including material preparation timelines. Collaborates with the Purchasing Department to ensure materials and resources are procured on time and in accordance with project specifications.

•       Learns to generate comprehensive written welding procedures, qualifications and instructions, including Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs) & final Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).

•       At 30 days, can independently run 5-10 weld procedure qualifications. Meets with the VP of Manufacturing to discuss learnings and performance so far, and determine goals for the next 60 days to further contribute and support the team.  

3 months and ongoing:

•       Manages weld procedure qualifications independently, handling customer submittals and coordinating with the shop, & oversees qualification & criteria with an acceptance rate of 70%.

•       Examines process trends by conducting in-depth analysis to devise solutions following the 80-20 principle for ongoing process enhancement. Generates and interprets 90-day data for weld defects and identifies potential areas for improvement.

•       Partners with the Welding Leads and becomes familiar with the automated welding equipment. Provides support to the Polysoude Automatic Tube Welding department by assisting in machine maintenance and the development of welding procedures.

6 months and ongoing:

•       Is seen as a trusted member of the Welding team, paired with consistent precision and flexibility as different projects come up. 

•       Creates welding specification summaries, including welding processes to ensure compliance and high-quality welding outcomes. Streamlines welding procedures and database management, while integrating customer specifications into the documentation process.  

•       Conducts assessments of weld quality and performs failure analysis when issues are reported.

12 months and ongoing:

•       Runs weld procedures 100% independently and ensures timely customer approval and submits weld procedures to the Lab with the goal of approval on the first submission.

•       Achieves a turnaround time of two weeks for weld procedures, within 14 days of the initial request, which represents a successful outcome.

•       Utilizes Weld ProWrite software to track the results of non-descriptive testing and identifies and initiates the resolution process for welding-related defects in both shops. 

•       Continues to take on more complex weld procedures, including chrome alloys, tube-to-tubesheet welding, automated welding processes, etc.

EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

✓  1+ years’ experience reading, interpreting, and determining appropriate welding procedures and processes based on customer specifications and industry requirements required 

✓  Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology or related field, or 2+ years of relevant industrial experience highly preferred 

✓  2+ years of hands-on experience in welding engineering or welding engineering technical support in a heater exchange manufacturing environment highly preferred       

✓  ASME B&PV Section VII Division 1, Section II, Section IX. ASME B& PV Section VII Division 2 and AWS code experience a plus 

✓  Highly skilled with various office equipment, computers, and various programs including MS Outlook, Word, and Excel and weld procedure software required

✓  This position will support both of our shop locations in Pearland, TX & Sulphur, LA and will be expected to travel to the location they are not based out of 1-2x per month for typically 1-2 days required

Working hours: Has a “flex time” schedule with the core hours being 9am-4pm Monday through Friday. We are in the service industry, so there may be the rare occasion where weekend on call duties are required- these are minimal
