Project/Test Lab Engineer - Pumps (#26-516)

Location(s): Houston, TX

JOB SUMMARY

The Project Engineer is responsible for the design, development, testing, in the manufacture of vertical pumps. This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, hydraulics, pump performance, manufacturing processes, quality control, and applicable industry standards.

The Project Engineer will create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation while working closely with customers, manufacturing, quality control, testing, purchasing, and other engineering personnel. The position will also support pump testing and troubleshooting activities to ensure products meet customer requirements, project specifications, and applicable industry standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and Modeling: Design mechanical components, pump assemblies, auxiliary equipment, and test fixtures using 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor. Create and maintain detailed engineering drawings, models, and specifications for manufacturing and assembly.

  • Pump Hydraulics and Performance: Develop and maintain a strong understanding of centrifugal pump hydraulics, including flow, head, efficiency, NPSH, specific speed, system curves, affinity laws, hydraulic losses, and pump operating characteristics. Apply hydraulic principles to pump selection, design evaluation, troubleshooting, and performance verification.

  • Pump Testing and Analysis: Support the setup and execution of pump performance tests, including hydraulic and mechanical testing. Review and analyze test results for flow, head, efficiency, power, vibration, temperature, and NPSH. Identify abnormal test results and assist with troubleshooting and corrective actions. Ensure testing is performed in accordance with applicable API, Hydraulic Institute, customer, and project requirements.

  • Specification Review: Review customer specifications, purchase orders, project requirements, and applicable technical standards. Identify design requirements, testing requirements, quality requirements, and potential technical concerns prior to and throughout project execution.

  • Manufacturability: Work closely with machinists, welders, assemblers, and manufacturing personnel to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and meet engineering requirements. Provide engineering support for manufacturing issues and assist with resolving design or fabrication concerns.

  • Quality Control: Support quality control activities by reviewing inspection requirements, dimensional reports, material certifications, nonconformance reports, and other quality documentation. Assist with root cause investigations, corrective actions, and disposition of nonconforming components. Maintain a strong understanding of quality requirements and ensure engineering designs and documentation support consistent product quality.

  • Documentation: Develop and maintain technical documentation including bills of materials, engineering drawings, calculations, assembly instructions, test procedures, test reports, inspection requirements, and operating documentation.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related engineering field.

  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in mechanical design, rotating equipment, centrifugal pumps, or pump manufacturing.

  • Strong understanding of centrifugal pump design, hydraulics, pump performance, and hydraulic testing.

  • Experience with pump performance testing and the ability to interpret pump curves and test data.

  • Working knowledge of Hydraulic Institute standards and API 610 requirements.

  • Proficient in 3D CAD software such as Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, tolerances, and manufacturing processes.

  • Working knowledge of quality control practices, inspection methods, dimensional requirements, and nonconformance processes.Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, inspection reports, and technical documentation.

  • Familiarity with API, ASME, ANSI, Hydraulic Institute, and other applicable industry standards.

  • Strong engineering calculation, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to investigate pump performance issues and determine potential mechanical or hydraulic causes.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in engineering documentation and technical work.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, manufacturing personnel, quality control personnel, machinists, assemblers, and other engineering team members.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work based on project requirements and deadlines.
